Winter Weather Announcement

All classes and activities at Kean Ocean will continue to be conducted remotely through Sunday, March 1, due to ongoing power issues.

This remote schedule applies only to Kean Ocean. Kean’s main campus in Union and Kean Skylands will operate as normal. 

Only essential personnel should report in person for work at Kean Ocean during this time. Employees with questions about their status should consult their supervisor.

Future Teachers' Academy

Kean University, New Jersey’s first teacher’s college, offers majors that lead to successful careers in education. High school students that participate in Kean's FTA benefit from meaningful experiences that emphasize equity, innovation and reflective practice.  

Kean student teacher conducts Early Childhood Education class

As part of our ongoing efforts to support districts in encouraging local high school graduates to consider teaching as a profession,  Kean’s College of Education established the Kean Future Teacher Academy (FTA). Over the past 20 years, faculty have worked alongside high school teachers to provide juniors and seniors with an opportunity to explore various programs that lead to certification while experiencing hands on workshops.

Kean University's Future Teacher Academy is a bi-annual on campus event (Fall and Spring) for high school students that express an interest in teaching as a career. The students that attend the FTA events work directly with COE faculty as they:

  • Observe experienced teachers and real-world applications of various instructional methods and best practices 
  • Explore and implement emerging educational research and technology
  • Translate and apply theories to classroom practice
  • Prepare to enter the teaching profession and succeed as an effective educator

Roberta and Alvin Freeman have spent years in school together. The couple met as teachers in Long Branch, went to Kean together to earn their master’s and doctorate degrees in education, and now both serve as school superintendents – in neighboring towns.
