In-Person Commencement FAQs
Q. Is Kean University holding in-person graduation ceremonies?
Yes, we look forward to celebrating this milestone with graduates and their families. In-person ceremonies will begin Monday, July 27 at Alumni Stadium on Kean’s Union campus.
Q. How do I take part?
Kean graduates were required to sign up by July 17 to take part in the ceremonies, and each student is scheduled for a specific date and time. Students must log in to the Marching Order website to confirm registration, and provide names and contact information for guests, by Friday, July 24.
Q. How many guests can I bring?
Each graduate may bring up to two guests. When you log in to Marching Order, you can say whether you or your guests require special accommodations, including accessible seating and parking. If you do not confirm attendance and provide guest information, you and/or your guests will not be permitted to attend.
Q. Do we need tickets?
After you confirm your registration, you will be emailed e-tickets for your guests to enter the stadium. The tickets will be scanned and can be on paper or a mobile device. You will also receive a digital “Graduate Pass” with a specific number for your place in the lineup and your seat on the field for the ceremony. Make sure you bring your number with you and do not exchange it with other graduates.
Q. What if I’m concerned about COVID-19?
Graduates and guests are strongly encouraged to monitor their own health between now and the ceremony. Anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, including fever, cough or shortness of breath, is NOT allowed to attend the ceremony under any circumstances. Likewise, anyone who is required to quarantine under the state’s travel advisory or because they had close contact with someone confirmed to have COVID-19 is NOT allowed to attend the ceremony under any circumstances.
Q. Can my friends and family watch it online?
Yes. The ceremony will be live streamed on kean.edu/commencement.
Q. When should I arrive? What should I wear?
Please arrive on campus, wearing your gown over your clothes, one hour before your ceremony. Arrive via the Green Lane entrance, near Alumni Stadium, and travel in the same vehicle as your guests to reduce congestion.
Q. What about masks?
Graduates and guests must wear face coverings from the time you arrive on campus until you leave. Anyone without a mask will be denied entry.
Q. What happens when I arrive?
University staff will take the temperature of graduates and guests while in your vehicles. If anyone in the vehicle has a temperature above 100.4, everyone in the vehicle will be denied entry. Graduates should not put on their caps until after temperature is taken, to avoid increasing the temperature reading.
Q. Where do I park?
Vehicles will be directed to the Kean Hall parking lot. Please stay in your vehicle until directed to the stadium. Gates will open 45 minutes before each ceremony begins. No one is allowed to congregate at the stadium entrance or elsewhere.
Q. Is social distancing required?
Graduates will line up outside Alumni Stadium and must maintain social distancing while in line. Guests who arrive together will be seated in pairs at least six feet from other guests, unless requested. Guests who arrive alone or request seating alone will be seated at least six feet from others.
Q. What will the ceremony look like?
Graduates will maintain social distancing while marching onto the field, and will sit in assigned chairs placed an appropriate distance apart. Chairs will be sanitized between ceremonies. The ceremony will include remarks from academic leaders. Then each graduate will get to hear their name called, cross the stage, and pose for a picture.
Q. Will I be handed a diploma cover?
Graduates were already mailed diploma covers, and may bring them to carry as they cross the stage. For safety reasons, please do not share covers with other graduates.
Q. Do I have to keep wearing my face mask?
If you wish to remove your mask while crossing the stage and posing for your photo, you may as long as you put it back on immediately after leaving the stage and returning to your seat. The stage will be arranged to maintain social distancing for that purpose.
