Getting Started: Admissions & Application
Am I an international applicant?
You are considered an international applicant if you are applying to study at Kean University from outside your home country. International applicants must meet additional requirements, including proof of English language proficiency and visa eligibility. Both international and domestic students complete their application through apply.kean.edu.
When should I apply?
Kean University reviews applications on a rolling basis, but has the following preferred deadlines for international students:
Freshman International Application Deadlines
- February 15: Architectural Studies (B.A.)
- April 30: Preferred Application Deadline - Applications are accepted on a rolling basis thereafter.
- May 1: Preferred Tuition Deposit Deadline
Transfer International Application Deadlines
- November 1: Spring Priority Deadline
- March 1: Nursing Prelicensure (BSN 3-yr) - Fall Start Only
- May 1: Architectural Studies (B.A.)
- May 30: Graphic Design (B.F.A.)
- June 1: Fall Priority Deadline
Can I visit Kean University?
Yes, campus tours are available both in person and virtually. Visit the Admissions website to sign up for an in-person tour or explore the 360° virtual campus tour.
How do I pay the application fee?
You can pay the $75 non-refundable application fee online through Kean University’s application portal using a credit or debit card.
Can I receive a promo code to waive the application fee?
You can get a promo code by attending one of our virtual information sessions at Kean University. Register and join to qualify!
How do I know if my application is complete?
You can check the status of your application and see any missing materials by logging into Kean’s Application Portal.
How long will it take for me to receive a decision?
Once all application materials are received, Kean University typically takes 2–4 weeks to issue an admissions decision for undergraduate programs. Graduate timelines may vary by department.
I want to study at Kean, but my English proficiency isn’t good enough yet. What can I do?
Kean University does not offer ESL (English as a Second Language) programs, but there are several language schools in the area that can help you improve your English before you begin your academic program. Once you meet the English proficiency requirements, you can apply or reapply to Kean.
Additionally, Kean University offers the SUPERA - Spanish Speaking Program for Freshman Applicants. This program offers General Education courses in Spanish while students complete the ESL requirements. After finishing the ESL sequence, usually by the second year, students transition to all-English courses. There is no English Language Test Score (DuoLingo/IELTS/TOEFL) or SAT requirements for this program.
Do I need GRE or GMAT to be admitted to Kean University?
Some graduate programs require GRE or GMAT, but many have waived this requirement. Check your program’s specific page to view the admission criteria.

How does Kean University help international students transition?
The Center for International Studies (CIS) Office assists you through orientation, airport guidance, academic and visa workshops, and provides continuous support throughout your academic journey at Kean University.
Can I talk to a student to gain insight?
Yes, Kean offers opportunities to connect with current students and ambassadors through the Office of Admissions or the Center for International Studies. To get started, contact international@kean.edu.
Can I work on campus?
Yes, F-1 international students can work on campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and breaks. No additional work authorization is needed for on-campus job.
Is housing available for International Students?
On-campus housing is available, including residence halls and apartments. Apply early after admission.
What if I don't want to live on campus?
Living on campus is not required. Students may choose to live off-campus and can use Kean’s off-campus housing resources or local rental options. Ensure access to public transportation if you choose to live off campus.
Paying for College: Tuition, Fees & Payments
How much is the tuition and fees for international students?

All non-immigrant alien visa holders (this includes F’s, J’s and H’s) regardless of New Jersey residency are charged out-of-state tuition and fees. Payment Plans are available through KeanWISE.
How do international students pay their university fees?
Kean accepts payments via Flywire, bank wire transfers, and through the online student account portal.
