Dear Kean Community,

As we move through this joyful season, I want to express my deep gratitude to each of you. This time of year always reminds me how fortunate we are to be part of such a vibrant, dedicated and supportive community. Last weekend, I had the privilege of celebrating with many of Kean’s strongest supporters at the Kean University Foundation holiday party. It was a wonderful evening of fellowship and a chance to reflect on the incredible momentum we’ve built together.

We welcomed both longtime donors who have supported Kean for decades and new friends who have recently connected with our mission and students. I was especially pleased to celebrate alongside our labor leadership, including guests from New Jersey City University who joined us for the first time. Their presence was a powerful reminder of our shared commitment to creating opportunities through education. Philanthropy is becoming a stronger part of Kean’s culture, and it was wonderful to see it come to life in such a meaningful way.

I’m also looking forward to our Faculty and Staff Holiday Party from 3-5 p.m. on Monday at STEM. We will gather in gratitude to celebrate those who give their all, every day, in service of our students. I’m proud to work beside each of you, and I look forward to spending this time together.

Earlier today, I started my morning with a fresh haircut from one of our talented students, Christian Garcia, a senior computer science major. I appreciated the great cut and enjoyed our conversation about what it means to live with gratitude.

Students, finals are here. You’ve come so far, and now is the time to buckle down, finish strong and show what you’ve learned. You’ve got this.

Dear Kean Community,

As the semester winds down and we prepare for final exams, I want to encourage each of our students to finish strong. The final stretch can be challenging, but you are not alone. We have built a campus environment filled with resources to help you succeed, and now is the time to take full advantage of them.

If you need academic support, the Nancy Thompson Learning Commons offers tutoring, writing assistance and more to help you stay on track. For those who may be feeling overwhelmed, the Kean Wellness Center provides counseling services in a safe and supportive environment, and for students in need of essential items, our Cougar Pantry in Downs Hall and Little Cougar Pantries across campus are here to ensure no one goes without essential items. These services are available to every Cougar, and I encourage you to use them freely. Faculty and staff, please continue guiding students toward these resources as we wrap up the semester together.

We’ve also lined up several events to support your success and well-being during finals. Whether you want to relax in the Stress Less Station, power through studying at the Study Café, find calm in the Zen Zone hosted by our Student Government Association, enjoy some fun at Kean After Dark: A Jolly Night, or fuel up at Midnight Breakfast, there is something for everyone. If you haven’t registered for Spring 2026 yet, now is the time to meet with your advisor and secure the courses you need. Don’t wait because classes are filling quickly, and we want you to stay on your path to graduation.

I want to spotlight some exciting achievements in Kean Athletics. This week, we celebrated the announcement of a $1 million donation from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation to the Eastern College Athletic Conference to launch the inaugural ECAC Flag Football League. Kean’s women’s flag football team is proud to be a founding member of what will become the largest intercollegiate league of its kind. This investment, directed by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, reflects the Johnson family’s and the New York Jets' strong commitment to expanding access and opportunity for women in sports.

Additionally, please join me in congratulating our volleyball standouts Aspen O’Brien and Cayley Elena Morrison, who were named Second Team All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and Ashley Torok, who received Honorable Mention. And a big Cougar shout-out to Head Coach Tasha Pointer on her first win with Kean Women’s Basketball after their victory over Ramapo College.

Finally, I hope to see many of you tomorrow at the Board of Trustees meeting at our beautiful Kean Ocean campus in Toms River. Let’s finish the semester with strength, determination and Cougar pride.

Dear Kean Community,

As we enter this season of “Giving” Thanks, I am reminded that gratitude is more than a moment on the calendar. It is a practice, a posture and a powerful force for good. This week, I invite our entire community to reflect not only on what we are thankful for, but on how we can give thanks in ways that uplift others and strengthen the world we share. Giving thanks is more than speaking words of gratitude. It is the act of transforming appreciation into action. It is choosing compassion when it is easier to turn away. It is extending grace in moments that call for understanding. It is recognizing humanity in one another, especially when the world feels divided or uncertain.

In this season, may we commit ourselves to giving thanks through service, kindness and the courageous belief that peace is possible on our campuses, in our neighborhoods and across the globe. Each small gesture of empathy strengthens the bonds that hold us together. Each act of generosity lights a path for others to follow. And each moment of gratitude reminds us that hope is not passive; it is something we build together. As we pause to appreciate the blessings in our lives, let us also give thanks for the people around us, the students who motivate us, the colleagues who support us, the families who anchor us and the communities we are privileged to serve. May our gratitude inspire us to continue striving for a more just, compassionate and peaceful world.

This week, we proudly hosted our first Thanksgiving Wellness Luncheon with the staff from the Office of Student Accounting, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of the Registrar and the One Stop Service Center. These departments work hand in hand every day to support our students. It was a celebration of unity, gratitude and the incredible teamwork that defines their work. Their shared mission is simple: they are one team dedicated to helping our students succeed. This luncheon was created to honor that commitment, recognize their collective hard work and give everyone a moment to pause, connect and give thanks. My thanks to organizers Dawn Hudson and Gorety Archelus from the Office of Student Accounting and to everyone who joined us in making this first celebration meaningful.

Kean's Annual Turkey Trot collected donations for students and families in need

We also hosted the third annual Turkey Trot, bringing students and employees together in a spirited show of community and wellness. Employees also supported the Cougar Pantry with donations, helping ensure our community members have access to essential resources. Thank you to all who took part. Your energy and generosity reflect the best of Kean during this season of gratitude.

At the New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City, I had the pleasure of joining alumni, public servants and friends of Kean at a special reception recognizing our graduates in government. We honored Ed Oatman ’98, a valued member of our Board of Trustees who also serves as Union County Manager. His work exemplifies the impact our alumni are making every day.

Tomorrow we will celebrate the dedication of our Childcare Center in honor of Betty C. Elrod Cobb ’75, an alumna who taught for over 40 years in the Newark Public Schools and left a legacy of compassion, service and community leadership. We are deeply grateful to her daughter, Karla Elrod, for her generosity and commitment to honoring her mother’s memory. This new center will stand as a tribute to Betty’s life and work and reflects our shared belief in the transformative power of education.

Kudos to the women’s volleyball team for their first NCAA tournament win yesterday against Lasell University. Let’s wish them all luck tonight in their next game against Tufts University.

Dear Kean Community,

It’s been an energizing and inspiring week here at Kean, one that reminded me of the power of collaboration and the strength of our community.

Kean University and New Jersey City University (NJCU) came together once again for a meaningful Town Hall, this time held right here on our Union campus. I was proud to join NJCU President Andrés Acebo for a powerful conversation about our journey toward a stronger, more unified future for higher education in New Jersey.

The atmosphere in the room was incredible. Students, faculty and staff came ready with thoughtful questions and open minds, and the conversations that took place made it clear: our communities are deeply engaged and invested in this process. I was especially inspired by the participation of students from both Kean and NJCU, who continue to impress with their insight and leadership. The future of higher education is in good hands.

As we continue this historic process, I want to reaffirm our commitment to transparency and shared progress. We are making history together, and I’m proud to walk alongside all of you as we help shape the future of our institutions and our state.

Before the Town Hall, our Well-Being, Human Resources and Student Affairs teams hosted mixers that allowed both communities to connect on a more personal level. I want to thank each of them for helping create space for real conversations and relationship-building. These moments are vital as we navigate this historic opportunity together.

We also came together this week for a special Gratitude Gathering. It was a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect on the incredible heart work our faculty and staff bring to Kean every single day. There is a real difference between simply doing your job and showing up every day with your heart open, ready to support students and colleagues on their path to success. The event was joyous and filled with appreciation for those who make Kean such a special place and reminded us that building a strong community begins with mutual care and respect. I am sincerely thankful for your continued dedication.

I’d like to give a special shout-out to Bailey Vick, assistant director in our Office of Residence Life, who was recently honored with the Mid-Level Professional Award from the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers. This regional award recognizes professionals who have made a lasting impact on housing and residence life, and Bailey is more than deserving. Congratulations, Bailey, and thank you to Director of Residence Life Punit Patel for continuing to champion professional development across his team.

Finally, let’s cheer on our women’s volleyball team as they host No. 3 Stockton University this Saturday at 4 p.m. in the NJAC Championship. Come out and support our Cougars. They are climbing higher every day, and so is Kean. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Dear Kean Community,

This past week was a powerful reminder that leadership and global engagement are at the core of who we are at Kean University.

At the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Convention, we connected with educators from across the state, including many Kean alumni who are shaping the future in classrooms every day. Our presence showcased the strength of our academic programs and reinforced our deep roots as a teachers college dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders.

That same commitment reached across borders as I had the honor of representing Kean during Governor Phil Murphy’s economic mission to Mexico City, led by Choose New Jersey. We were proud to oversee the signing of a new academic partnership between New Jersey City University (NJCU) and Fundación Universidad de las Américas Puebla, an important step toward expanding access to global learning opportunities.

Partnerships like these are central to our vision as we move toward the launch of Kean Jersey City. They demonstrate what's possible when we stay focused on opening doors and creating meaningful experiences that prepare our students for the world.

Looking ahead, I hope you’ll join me and NJCU President Andrés Acebo for our next joint Town Hall on Wednesday, November 12, on our Union campus. This is a valuable opportunity to engage in open dialogue as we move forward together. Today is the deadline to RSVP and submit questions.

I also invite faculty and staff to join me for our Gratitude Gathering on Monday, November 10. Together, we’ll take time to reconnect, reflect on what we’ve achieved, and celebrate the people who make Kean such a special place.

I recently had the opportunity to join a group of Wenzhou-Kean University students to learn how to make dumplings, a family activity in China that brings people together and symbolizes unity and harmony. We shared a Thanksgiving meal and exchanged holiday traditions, a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, gratitude brings us closer together.

Finally, a big shout-out to our women’s volleyball team, who captured the NJAC regular season title for the first time since 2017. With a 7-1 conference record, they are leading with heart, hustle and Cougar pride. Congratulations to our student-athletes and coaches on this outstanding achievement.

Dear Kean Community,

Each week, I look for a common thread, a small narrative that ties our work together and helps tell the Kean story. This week, that thread is connection: how we connect with one another, with the data that guides us, and with the mission that defines our purpose.

I began the week in Baltimore at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) annual conference, reflecting on what it means to be an urban university and how that identity shapes our responsibility and impact. The event brought together university presidents, city mayors and national leaders to explore some of the most pressing issues in higher education today, from student engagement to leadership in uncertain times.

Kean was proud to be part of these national conversations. Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. David Birdsell moderated a panel titled How Do Anchor Institutions Sustain Community-Engaged Projects in Challenging Times? This session reinforced our growing role as a national model for how anchor institutions engage their communities with purpose and resilience. We also brought a small delegation of Kean leaders to learn from their peers, share insights and build meaningful relationships.

That theme of connection continued midweek at our first-ever Kean alumni network event in the D.C.–Maryland–Virginia (DMV) region. It was a pleasure to speak about the power of being interconnected as Kean alumni and to invite our graduates to reengage through their time, talents and treasure. We connected with alumni across industries and graduation years, many of whom had not been back to campus in years. They were eager to learn about the tremendous transformation taking place at Kean and to explore ways to support the next generation of Cougars.

This event was part of a growing initiative to strengthen regional alumni networks nationwide, including gatherings in New York City and along the Jersey Shore. My thanks to Alumni Director Carol Ann Koert for her work organizing this event and the Office of Government Affairs and Community Partnerships and the Kean University Foundation for their support.

I also had the opportunity to participate in our Annual Assessment Summit virtually. We introduced a new platform that will help us better capture personalized data and connect it to meaningful action. This tool will strengthen our ability to make data-informed decisions in alignment with our mission and core values.

I closed the week on a high note at one of my favorite events of the year: the Presidential Excellence Awards and Retiree Celebration. We came together as a community to recognize outstanding students, faculty and staff for their scholarship, service and leadership. We also honored our recent retirees and thanked them for their many years of dedication to Kean. My thanks to everyone who attended and to the Kean University Foundation for its continued support of this important tradition.
I also want to congratulate T. Itunu Balogun, vice president of innovation and engagement and deputy chief of staff, for being named a 2025 NJBIZ Forty Under 40 honoree. Itunu has been a dedicated partner in every space she occupies, going back to our time at the New Jersey Department of Education. Her passion for our students and unwavering commitment to excellence are truly inspiring. We are grateful to have her on our team.

Finally, a reminder: next week is the gubernatorial election. I encourage every member of our community to exercise their democratic right and vote. Thank you for all you do to advance our shared mission. Your commitment is the thread that weaves our story together.

Dear Kean Community,

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Hudson County Executive Craig Guy to discuss ways to build meaningful community connections and expand access to higher education in the region through the creation of Kean Jersey City. These conversations are critical as we move forward with the merger between Kean and New Jersey City University. As the state's urban research university, Kean takes seriously its responsibility to serve as an anchor institution in the communities we call home, including Jersey City.

We are deeply committed to making sure our presence enhances opportunities for residents and adds long-term value to their lives. That is why the John S. Watson Institute for Urban Policy and Research has already conducted a Community Engagement Analysis in Jersey City. This work will help ensure that the community’s voices are heard and respected throughout this integration process. We are building a future together, and we want our community to be part of the journey.

I was also proud to celebrate a major milestone yesterday with the first cohort of business owners who completed the Building for Growth initiative. This exciting program supports small business owners, particularly minorities and veterans, by equipping them with the skills and strategies needed to secure state contracts and grow their businesses. We are incredibly grateful to our partners at the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City for believing in this work. This year, 57 entrepreneurs graduated from the program, and thanks to new funding, we are thrilled that it will continue next year. Shout-out to Program Manager John Murray for leading this impactful initiative for Kean. It is a powerful example of how we live our role as an anchor institution through public engagement and economic empowerment.

My thanks also to everyone who joined us for this week’s President’s Distinguished Lecture Series event featuring renowned journalist Kara Swisher. It was a dynamic and insightful conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing influence on our world. I extend my appreciation to Senior Vice President Katherine Gallagher for her excellent moderation of the discussion. As I shared in my Opening Day address, Kean is embracing AI and exploring its potential across disciplines. Hosting thought leaders like Kara Swisher is one way we are bringing that vision to life.

I also want to recognize the outstanding achievements of our Kean athletes. Congratulations to our women’s volleyball team, currently ranked first in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and 43rd nationally with an impressive 20-5 overall record. And kudos to women’s swimming head coach Chris Swenson, who tied former coach Tim Brown as the winningest coach in program history with 53 wins at Kean. These accomplishments reflect the hard work, dedication and excellence we see across our Cougar community.

I invite you all to join me for our Presidential Excellence Awards and Retiree Celebration on Thursday, October 30 at 4:30 p.m. in the STEM Building. This special event honors our outstanding faculty, staff, students and retirees whose contributions help drive Kean forward. Do not forget to RSVP. Dear Kean Community,

This week, I had the honor of leading a distinguished Kean University delegation to our Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU) campus in China. Each visit here reaffirms the strength and impact of our international partnerships and the vital role they play in the Kean experience. One of the highlights of our visit was the academic retreat. I was proud to bring together faculty from both campuses to strengthen academic collaboration and foster deeper connections across our global community. Together, we discussed new academic programs we plan to offer at WKU. I was also excited to learn more about the ongoing joint research projects that are part of the President’s Global-Local (Glocal) Anchor Institution Research Grant program. International research collaboration opens doors to discoveries and perspectives.

This visit was also meaningful because we had the honor of bringing along a delegation of labor leaders to witness the strength and potential of global academic exchange. I extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. James Castiglione of the Kean Federation of Teachers, Dr. William Calathes of the New Jersey City University (NJCU) American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union and Emari DiGiorgio, president of the AFT Council of New Jersey State College Locals, for participating in this impactful experience. I also want to thank Henry Amoroso, the state monitor at NJCU, for joining the delegation. As we move forward with our historic and transformative merger with NJCU, this kind of collaboration and mutual understanding is essential. It reaffirms our commitment to building a unified and inclusive academic future for all.

We were also joined by a remarkable group of K–12 educators from College Achieve Public Schools (CAPS), Plainfield, Asbury Park and the Middlesex County Magnet Schools. These dedicated educators participated in a symposium on international educational leadership and practice here at WKU and joined our labor leaders on tours of local schools in China. My thanks to College of Education Acting Dean Dr. Sancha Gray for organizing this symposium. As an anchor institution, Kean takes pride in our responsibility to support and uplift the broader educational community, including our K–12 partners.

Another special highlight of this visit was the opportunity for the WKU Board of Directors to meet with students from Kean USA who are currently studying abroad on the Wenzhou campus. Listening to their experiences, from navigating new cultures and cuisines to building lasting friendships, was a powerful reminder of the value of studying abroad in shaping students' worldviews. International education is a cornerstone of the Kean experience, and we are excited to expand access to these opportunities for all students, including those from NJCU, in the years ahead.

During this visit, the Board of Directors and I were also pleased to recognize outgoing WKU Chairman Frank Wang, a proud Kean alumnus who has served in this leadership role for more than 10 years. We thank him for his dedication and years of service. We look forward to working closely with Pan Jianzhong, the newly appointed chairman, as we continue to strengthen WKU and expand its global impact.

My heartfelt thanks go to Chancellor for International Campuses Felice Vazquez and the entire WKU team, led by Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Cary Anderson, for coordinating this important delegation. Experiencing the energy of our international partnerships in person leaves no doubt that we are changing lives through education around the world.

Dear Kean Community,

This week, Kean had the honor of hosting the inaugural New Jersey Student Mental Health Summit presented by the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education. It was a privilege to speak at the event, which brought attention to an issue that affects us all: mental health. The conversations reinforced how important it is to create an academic environment where mental well-being is prioritized, especially during times of change.

One of those pivotal changes is the ongoing merger with New Jersey City University (NJCU). On Wednesday, I joined NJCU President Andrés Acebo for a joint town hall on the NJCU campus, where we spoke candidly with members of both communities about the road ahead. Transitions like this often come with questions and uncertainty. It is normal to feel anxious, and it is essential that we acknowledge those feelings and address them directly.
That is why the summit felt especially timely. It reminded us that communication, transparency and compassion must guide our leadership as we move forward. We remain committed to open dialogue and creating a space where every voice is heard. Together, we can address concerns, share ideas and support one another as we work to integrate NJCU into our university family. I thank everyone who traveled to NJCU to attend in person and the more than 300 people who watched online.

At its core, this merger is about more than structure; it is about people. It is about building a community grounded in our values and mission to foster academic excellence, equity and inclusivity, while creating meaningful public impact. With empathy and a shared sense of purpose, we will make this transition not just successful, but transformational.

Kean’s brand continues to shine around the globe. This week, the NFL and the New York Jets welcomed Kean to London to attend their flag football tournament as part of the NFL’s International Game Series, where the Jets will take on the Denver Broncos this weekend at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Athletic Director Kelly Williams and Women’s Flag Football Head Coach Mandrele Hansford proudly represented Kean at the event, connecting with league professionals and gaining valuable insights as the sport continues to grow globally. With flag football set to make its Olympic debut in 2028, it is inspiring to see Kean and our student-athletes at the forefront of the game and learning from leaders in the field.

I thank Afia Law from the NFL, and Ian Lasher, Jeff Fernandez and Kean alumna Alexa Canas ’13 from the Jets for welcoming us and continuing to build a powerful partnership that creates meaningful opportunities for our students. Let us continue to lead with purpose, compassion and the belief that together, Cougars Climb Higher.

Dear Kean Community,

What an extraordinary week it has been at Kean University! Homecoming is always a special time of year when our entire community comes together to celebrate our shared pride in this beloved institution. The energy across campus has been nothing short of inspiring.

The week began with the Homecoming Breakfast at the Clock Tower on Cougar Walk, where students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered to enjoy fellowship, Cougar spirit and the simple joy of starting the day together as one community. Later in the week, we celebrated in style at the President’s Sneaker Ball, where students came dressed to impress and showcased their Kean pride with flair. Thank you to Alexa Cantres, Maria Heredia, Jason Pleitez, Sierra Gray, Avernell Hester, Bassante Nada, Cylia Blackmon, the Kean PULSE Programming Board and the President’s Advisory Council for planning such a vibrant and successful event.

Adding to the excitement, Wilkins Theatre came alive with the Keyshia Cole concert, which brought a packed house of students. Special thanks to Lori Berry, Carminda Owens, Beatriz Mundo and the Student Government Association Executive Board for making the concert a highlight of the week. I also want to thank the Kean University Police Department, Facilities, University Relations and The Cougar’s Byte for their support of all these events.

And we are not done yet. We are looking forward to the Homecoming Carnival tomorrow, where we will gather once again before cheering on our Cougars at the football game against Montclair State. These events are more than entertainment. They are traditions that connect generations by linking alumni memories to the experiences of our current students and building a living legacy of pride in Kean.

Amid this week’s celebrations, our University also took a significant step forward. The Board of Trustees approved a resolution authorizing the definitive agreement between Kean and New Jersey City University (NJCU). This agreement is the official contract that sets in motion the merger of two proud state institutions, each of which has been an anchor in its respective community for generations. Together, we are embarking on a transformative journey that will expand opportunities for students, strengthen academic and research pathways and change the higher education landscape in New Jersey. I want to thank the Board of Trustees for their leadership and vision in making this possible.

There is a powerful connection between Homecoming and this merger. Homecoming is about unity, tradition and celebrating what we can accomplish as a community. The merger with NJCU represents that same spirit on an even larger scale, as we prepare to join two universities together to create a future that is bigger and brighter than what either could achieve alone. It is about honoring our past while boldly stepping forward into a new era of growth and opportunity.

This week, we also have the honor of hosting the New Jersey lieutenant governor debate and gubernatorial forum on our campus, a powerful reminder of Kean’s role as an anchor institution. Kean embraces its responsibility to foster informed engagement on the issues that shape our state’s future. Moments like this remind us of what it means to be part of the Kean family and that we are all part of something greater: an institution that is rising, transforming and making history. Dear Kean Community,

This week reminded me just how far the Kean brand is reaching around the world. We sent a Kean team to Dubai to expand our initiatives in the region and connect with prospective students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Since signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the University of Dubai and the American University of Dubai (AUD), we have met with the presidents, leadership and faculty at both institutions to strengthen our collaborations focused on business, computer science, artificial intelligence, fintech, education and architecture. We are also exploring exciting new sports and recreation initiatives with AUD. Each partnership moves us closer to a truly global learning environment.

Under the leadership of Dr. Sancha K. Gray, acting dean of the College of Education, our work in the UAE also continues to grow through professional development and advanced degree pathways for teachers, counselors and school leaders. We hosted a networking reception for U.S. expatriate educators and signed a new MOU with Copperstone Education. I also had the honor of visiting students and faculty at GEMS Dubai American Academy and the North American International School, two institutions known for academic excellence and globally minded students. In addition, our Enrollment Management team represented Kean at the UAE’s largest college and university recruitment fair. This work reflects Kean’s growing presence as a global impact university.

Back in Union, we welcomed a leadership delegation from Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU). Dr. Eric Yang, vice chancellor of academic affairs, and Hing Kai Chan, dean of the College of Business and Public Management, joined Felice Vazquez, Kean’s chancellor for international campuses, in welcoming Wu Xiaodong, executive director of the Zhejiang Association of Science, who made his first visit to our region since Kean and Wenzhou formed a relationship. Dean Chan and Dr. Yang will continue to spend the week on campus collaborating with us on the development of 10 new academic programs for WKU.

More than 1,100 students and alumni from Kean and New Jersey City University attended yesterday's outstanding Fall Career and Internship Fair. Events like this provide real pathways to opportunity and reflect our deep commitment to student success. I thank our entire Career Services team for making it possible, especially Director Rita Papaleo Ruiz and Associate Director of Employer Engagement Paul Casey.

We also welcomed and inducted the new and returning members of the President’s Advisory Council (PAC) for the 2025–2026 academic year. This exceptional group of student leaders includes Ugochi Adibemma, Cylia Blackmon, Danielle Brathwaite, Chukwudinma Elumelu, Jasmine Hansford, Lauryn Repollet, Julia Obiri-Yeboah, Giuseppe Ippolito, Favour Oyelade, Jane Howlett, Yessica Jimenez, Nichole Acheampong, Justin Morton, Susan Berube, Shyanne Conklin, Joanne Ero, Sean Conway, Keyara Gaillard, Emeral Neloms, Bassant Nada, Hoong Shern Kong and Xingyue Mao. They will all play a critical role in shaping the student experience and advancing the University’s mission. I look forward to the work we will do together this year.

Congratulations also to Dr. Carlos Rodriguez on being named one of BINJE’s Best Hispanic Business Leaders of 2025. This well-deserved honor highlights his leadership, impact and dedication.

I hope you are all getting ready for Homecoming Week. The K25 Cougar Grand Prix kicks off Monday, September 29 and runs through Saturday, October 4. The week is packed with events, including the President’s Sneaker Ball hosted by PAC and Kean PULSE, a concert featuring Keyshia Cole, and the annual Homecoming game where our football team will take on Montclair State University. It is going to be a memorable week of celebration, connection and Cougar spirit.

I also want to thank the Institute of Music for Children for honoring me this week with the Lighthouse Keeper Award. This summer, we welcomed nearly 200 children from the Institute to Kean’s campus for camp, and it was great to hear how much the experience meant to them. It was a powerful reminder of how Kean serves as an anchor institution for our community.

Big things are happening at Kean, here in New Jersey and around the world, and I’m energized by what is ahead.

Lamont Repollet attends university forum in India with Governor Phil Murphy

Dear Kean Community,

Today I had the honor of representing Kean University at a roundtable with the Association of Indian Universities in Delhi as part of Choose New Jersey’s mission to India, led by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. I shared how Kean is embracing mission-driven partnerships that deliver real value to the students and communities we serve. I also highlighted our new bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence and our ongoing commitments to international education through Wenzhou-Kean University, as well as our growing Travelearn programs. I was proud to be part of this global dialogue and to stand alongside leaders from around the world who share my belief in the power of education to drive innovation and equity. Kean now has a seat at the table for these critical conversations.

Kean's brand is on the rise. This week, the Kean Board of Trustees voted to offer in-state tuition to all incoming and current students, beginning in Fall 2026. This pivotal decision supports our growth as a national research university and reinforces our commitment to equity and access on a global scale. It positions us to attract students from across the country and around the world who are seeking a high-quality education at an innovative, research-driven institution. The announcement made headlines worldwide with more than 800 news outlets covering the story. Watch this News 12 story to hear directly from our students on this issue.

Before I close, I want to speak directly about something vital to our campus. In the wake of recent events in our country, we have seen an increase in hateful rhetoric in public discourse, both online and in person. I have received a few reports of behavior occurring within our own campus community. Let me be absolutely clear: that kind of conduct has no place at Kean University. Whether you write something on a residence hall room door or post it on social media, it will be investigated and handled through our student conduct process, which can result in consequences ranging from a warning to suspension from housing or more severe consequences. This is not just about disciplinary policy; it is about living our values.

During our summer leadership conference, we reminded student leaders that they represent Kean University in all that they do. That message applies to all of us. What we say, what we share and how we treat one another speaks volumes about who we are. I urge you to think twice before sharing or engaging in behavior that does not reflect your best self or the inclusive, respectful community we strive to be.

Finally, I encourage all of our students to register for the upcoming Career, Internship and Part-Time Job Fair on Thursday, September 25. More than 120 employers will be at Harwood Arena. Don’t forget to bring your resume. It’s a great opportunity to find a spring or summer internship or a job after graduation. Students should also get ready for the K25 Cougar Grand Prix Homecoming Week taking place Monday, September 29 through Saturday, October 4. With events like the Sneaker Ball and the Keyshia Cole Homecoming Concert, it is going to be an exciting week celebrating all things Kean. I want to give a special shout-out to our student leaders and event organizers. Your work brings our community together and makes Kean feel like home.

Dear Kean Community,

Our Kean Day celebration today wrapped up an eventful and energizing week. More than 150 clubs, organizations and departments lined Cougar Walk to showcase the many ways our students can get involved. The energy was incredible. It's always inspiring to see how our students encourage each other, especially our freshmen and transfer students, to step in, try something new and build community. That kind of peer leadership reflects the strength of the culture we’ve created here. A heartfelt thank you to organizers Sheila Philbert, Sandra Espinal, Kaitlyn Miles and Donna Bost-White from Student Affairs for their tremendous work in bringing it all together on such a beautiful day.

Earlier this week, members of the Kean team were proud to attend the investiture ceremony for New Jersey City University President Andrés Acebo. President Acebo has been a trusted and visionary partner in our ongoing work to establish Kean Jersey City, and we are grateful for his leadership and support. We look forward to continuing our collaboration as we work together to expand opportunities for students in the region.

This week also brought an exciting opportunity to share Kean’s progress more broadly. Bill Miller, President and CEO of the Kean University Foundation, and I were honored to speak to the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation’s board of directors and executive team about the many initiatives underway at Kean. We are proud to be the first partner institution invited to do so under the leadership of Executive Director Gianna Durso-Finley and Associate Executive Director Lindsey Bohra. The Newcombe Foundation plays a vital role in supporting students, particularly mature students, students with disabilities and those facing financial challenges. We extend our sincere thanks to the Newcombe Foundation for its generous support and commitment to advancing equity in higher education.

We also had the privilege of hosting a national town hall on Black male voter engagement, presented by the nonprofit Black Men Vote. I joined an esteemed panel that included Dale Caldwell, New Jersey’s Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor; Newark Mayor Ras Baraka; and moderator Nii-Quartelai Quartey. Our discussion focused on the persistent issue of low voter turnout among Black men and ways we can work collectively to foster civic participation. I was grateful to contribute to a conversation that is sparking dialogue in communities across the country.

Our Cougar student-athletes also gave us plenty to celebrate this week. Congratulations to our Kean football team, which opened its season with a victory against SUNY Morrisville, our first opening win in 10 years. A special shoutout goes to Anthony Lopez, named New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Special Teams Player of the Week, and Tyler Suk, who earned NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week honors. Our women’s volleyball team is also off to a fantastic start with a 7-1 record, and standout senior Aspen O’Brien currently ranks second in NCAA Division III in assists per set. We’re excited to cheer them on as the season progresses. Tomorrow, our women’s soccer team will honor the memory of Assistant Coach Joe Colodne during their 4 p.m. game against John Jay College. I encourage our community to attend in support of the team and in remembrance of Coach Colodne.

As we reflect on these moments of pride and progress, it’s also important to pause and consider recent events that have deeply affected our nation, including the shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, school shootings, and the lockdowns and threats at several Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Regardless of political beliefs, we cannot tolerate political violence or hate of any kind. Our democracy depends on civil discourse, mutual respect and the protection of free speech, especially in times of disagreement. At Kean, we strive to build a community grounded in equity, inclusion and public impact. Every day is an opportunity to choose decency and empathy. Let’s continue to lead by example.

Dear Kean Community,

There’s nothing like the start of a new academic year. This season always brings a sense of renewal and excitement, but this year, it feels even more dynamic. I’m especially proud to be beginning my sixth academic year as president of Kean University. Thank you to everyone who joined me for my Opening Day address, whether in Wilkins Theatre or tuning in virtually. Your energy and support were palpable as we celebrated the incredible momentum building at Kean, from our R2 research designation to the bold new era we’re entering, driven by artificial intelligence and innovation. Your presence helped set a powerful tone for the year ahead.

Walking around campus this week, I was struck by how alive Kean feels. Students are back, energized and ready to climb higher. We’ve reached a new milestone, welcoming a record enrollment of nearly 19,000 students worldwide. That includes 2,000 new freshmen who were cheered on by the community during Freshman Convocation.

These new Cougars are also participating in some of the most forward-thinking academic programs in our history. More than half of our incoming students will take part in the revised General Education curriculum, which incorporates theme-based instruction and hands-on learning in the community. This revised curriculum is a significant achievement that reflects the incredible collaboration and academic innovation of our faculty and academic leadership. We are also launching a new bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, placing Kean at the forefront of preparing students for the careers of tomorrow.

None of this is possible without the dedication and heart of our campus community. I especially want to thank the nearly 200 volunteers who came out to support our students during Move-In Days, helping to unload cars, snapping photos for proud parents and easing a major life transition for so many Kean families. Thanks to you, our students received a warm welcome and a strong start. I’m proud to share that our residence halls are at 98 percent capacity, another record that reflects how many students are choosing to make Kean their home. Kudos to the Student Affairs team, led by Vice President Kerrin Lyles, for creating such a vibrant student experience.

As we kick off this new year, I encourage each of you to dive into all that campus life has to offer. One of the best opportunities is Kean Day, our annual celebration of involvement and connection, happening next Friday, September 12 from noon to 4 p.m. More than 100 clubs, organizations and departments will be set up with tables from Cougar Walk to Wilkins Theatre. Whether you’re looking to join a student group, explore a new hobby, or find your academic support network, you'll find it there.

And don’t forget to cheer on our Kean Athletics teams this weekend. We have home openers for football and field hockey right here on campus. Our cross country team is also kicking off its season in New Jersey, while our men’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams are competing in Virginia. Best of luck to all our student-athletes. We’re behind you all the way.

Dear Kean Community,

This week marked a powerful conclusion to a truly incredible academic year at Kean University. On Tuesday, we celebrated our graduates at our first joint Commencement, where 2,532 undergraduate and graduate students crossed the stage to be recognized for their tremendous accomplishments. It was an unforgettable celebration of academic excellence, determination and Cougar pride. I thank our inspiring commencement speaker, two-time Olympic medalist Laurie Hernandez, for sharing her wisdom and encouragement with our graduates and their guests. Her words reminded us of the power of resilience and the importance of pursuing our passions.

At Kean, we know how to deliver a fantastic Commencement celebration, and it is no small feat. This major undertaking showcases the very best of our university’s spirit, teamwork and dedication. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Conference and Event Services, Kean Stage, University Relations, Academic Affairs, Facilities and all the volunteers who served as marshals and in other volunteer roles. Your behind-the-scenes work ensured the day ran smoothly and created lifelong memories for our students and their families. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and I am deeply grateful.

Yesterday, we witnessed another historic moment for Kean and higher education in New Jersey. New Jersey City University Interim President Andrés Acebo and I signed a formal Letter of Intent to move forward with a merger to integrate NJCU into Kean as a new instructional site known as Kean Jersey City. More than 80 people from both institutions were present at our signing ceremony, all committed to a shared vision: supporting the success of students from diverse backgrounds through an inclusive and transformative education model. Our missions align in powerful ways, and while much work is ahead, we are well-positioned to lead this bold initiative. Together, we are creating new pathways to academic opportunity and social mobility for students who need it most.

Tomorrow, we look forward to connecting with our community in a new way at the inaugural “Rep Your Ride” Car Show beginning at 10 a.m. in the Kean Hall parking lot. This family-friendly event will showcase all types of vehicles from across the state, and we could not be more excited to bring car enthusiasts and families together on our campus. Special thanks to the Car Show Committee, especially Jason Lester, Jared DiRese, Sierra Gray, Jason Pleitez, Alissa DiScala, Julie Bunt, the University Relations, President’s Office and Kean University Foundation teams, and the many others who worked tirelessly to bring this event to life. Dear Kean Community,

This spring marks a historic chapter for Kean University. Last night, we proudly hosted the University’s first-ever doctoral hooding ceremony, a milestone reflecting the growth of Kean’s doctoral programs and research strength as an R2 institution. Fifty-nine scholars participated in the event, each having completed academically rigorous and deeply relevant research. Their work spanning education, health and other key areas will directly impact the communities we serve.

Their contributions remind us that Kean research matters. It was especially moving to see hundreds of friends and family members join us for this celebration, proudly supporting Kean’s newest doctoral alumni. This year, we even had a mother-daughter duo — Dr. Linda Reid and Dr. Yasmin Griffin — who earned their doctorates in education together. They remind us that education is transformational — not just for individuals, but across generations. As these remarkable graduates prepare to take their next steps, we send them off with pride and gratitude, knowing they will be leaders and changemakers in every field they touch.

Next week, we will hold our first joint commencement ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students at the Prudential Center in Newark. This unified celebration reflects our shared purpose across all levels of academic achievement. We are thrilled to welcome Olympic gold medalist and New Jersey native Laurie Hernandez as our keynote speaker. Laurie embodies excellence, perseverance and the courage to dream big — all values that resonate deeply with the Kean community. I encourage anyone who is not attending in person to watch the livestream on Kean.edu and join in celebrating our graduates wherever you are.

Today we came together for our third annual End-of-Year Faculty Research Conference, celebrating the outstanding achievements of faculty from both Kean USA and Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU). The conference — organized by faculty, for faculty — embraced the theme Climbing Higher Together, reflecting our shared commitment to academic excellence and collaboration. This year, 51 faculty members participated, including virtual presentations from WKU faculty for the first time, underscoring the strength and depth of our global academic community.

I had the pleasure of welcoming Diane ’61 and Bob Miron back to campus today for a tour of the Miron Student Center. Nearly a decade has passed since the University named the center in their honor, and it was a joy to show them how vibrant and central it has become to student life. We remain deeply grateful to the Mirons for their enduring support of Kean and our students.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Dr. Pragya Sharma from the College of Health Professions and Human Services, who has been named a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM), a meritorious distinction in the field of sports medicine. Excellent work, Dr. Sharma. Kudos also go out to track and field athletes Buddha Payne, Sam Gonzalez, Sarah Knoetig, Ava Blount, Jadesola Olayinka, Chaa-Nah-Yah Brathwaite and Free Daley who all set new university records at the NJAC Championships. This is the team’s second season, and they are representing Kean in a big way.

As the academic semester ends, we can see the culmination of months and years of hard work. That dedication is paying off in degrees earned, internships secured, job offers received and well-deserved summer breaks on the horizon. To all our students, faculty and staff: thank you for the passion and purpose you bring to our community each day. Dear Kean Community,

This week, I was honored and grateful to join Gov. Phil Murphy and Choose New Jersey on their New Jersey Gulf Arab States Economic Mission at such a critical moment in history for the global economy and higher education. The mission was designed to build relationships between New Jersey and key business, government and academic leaders in this vital region. For Kean, it was an incredible opportunity to engage with current and potential partners in Riyadh, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where interest and desire for connections with American universities run high, and support for shared research and outreach is strong.

Gov. Murphy and I had the privilege of signing Memorandums of Understanding with three leading universities: the American University in Dubai, the University of Wollongong in Dubai, and the University of Dubai. These agreements set the stage for programs that will expand opportunities for faculty and students to learn and lead in this region.

This mission is closely tied to Kean’s growing international profile. Our expertise in successfully operating as an international university, and now an R2 research university, is sought after and welcomed by partners worldwide. We are a world-class university that serves an international community to the benefit of our students in New Jersey, who are able to gain the diverse international experience and exposure they need to succeed in today’s global economy.

A highlight of the mission was a visit to the U.S. Navy base in Bahrain, home of the 5th Fleet. Thousands of U.S. service members – including hundreds from New Jersey – are working valiantly and tirelessly in this region to keep America, its interests and all of us safe and secure every day, even though most of us are unaware of their service. These unsung heroes deserve our support, respect and prayers. It reminded me of the critical role Kean's Center for Veteran Student Success, led by Vito E. Zajda, and our nationally recognized V.E.T.S. program plays in treating our soldiers with respect, addressing their needs and preparing them to succeed in future careers. We salute the 5th Fleet for their honorable service and recognize the veterans and military-affiliated students, faculty and staff within our Kean community.

Back at home today, we are celebrating the achievements of our honors graduates as the university comes together for the annual Honors Convocation. This year, more than 1,200 graduating students are eligible for recognition – a remarkable testament to the hard work, determination and academic excellence across our campus. We take immense pride in celebrating these students, whose dedication reflects the strength of our entire university community. We also had the opportunity to host Congresswoman LaMonica McIver from New Jersey's 10th Congressional District for a visit to the Kean Child Care and Development Center. Thanks to Congresswoman McIver for taking the time to see our top-notch facility in action and meet our youngest Cougars. A big shout-out to the Alumni Engagement and Kean University Foundation teams for hosting our fourth annual Noche Latina celebration with more than 120 alumni and friends last night.

I also want to congratulate our outstanding student-athletes and coaches who were honored with New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference awards. Kudos to baseball players Kyle Adorno, NJAC Player of the Year; Jason Gilman, NJAC Pitcher of the Year; Jason Basilicata, NJAC Fireman of the Year; and Neil Ioviero and staff, NJAC Coaching Staff of the Year. In softball, congratulations to Gina Mahlik, who was named Co-Rookie of the Year. And in women’s lacrosse, congratulations to Ella Petrosh, who earned NJAC Rookie of the Year – an incredible accomplishment following her recognition as NJAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Year this past fall. We are proud of all these Cougars’ excellence on and off the field.

As we look ahead, excitement is building for commencement, one of the most important and inspiring milestones in our academic year. It will be a proud moment for the entire Kean community as we come together to honor the Class of 2025’s hard work and achievements.

Dear Kean Community,

This week, we celebrated one of the University’s most inspiring annual traditions — Research Days. With nearly 1,300 student presenters, this event was an incredible showcase of scholarship and creativity at Kean. My senior team and I had the privilege of visiting the poster session at Harwood Arena, and the quality of the work on display truly blew me away. The research conducted by our undergraduate and graduate students reflects a deep commitment to inquiry, innovation and public impact — all central to our mission as New Jersey’s first urban research university. This year, the College of Liberal Arts and Michael Graves College collaborated to organize a creative showcase featuring creative and performing arts projects. Kudos to CLA Acting Associate Dean Dr. Beth Hyde and the faculty for coordinating such a great showcase.

Research Days 2025 exemplifies how our community continues to climb higher. As a proud R2 institution, Kean is focused on fostering this level of academic excellence. I want to personally thank Reenat Munshi, director of Student Research and Innovation, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, for organizing such a meaningful event. Please also join me in congratulating this year’s Research Days award winners: Undergraduate Student Researchers of the Year Ahad Shabazz-Henry (natural sciences), Nicholas Chatzopoulos (social sciences) and Jose Marchena (formal sciences); Master’s Student Researcher of the Year Michelle Manochio; and Doctoral Student Researcher of the Year Giana Giorello. As we move into commencement season, I want to reaffirm the values and expectations that define us as an inclusive and respectful campus community. These final weeks of the semester — and our commencement ceremonies — should be positive, celebratory moments for everyone. I know that you share that belief. We are living in divisive political times, but our community must remain grounded in our shared mission and core values. This includes standing firm in our commitment to equity, inclusivity and public impact. Let us all do our part to uphold the spirit and values that make Kean strong.

Finally, I want to recognize the continued excellence of our Cougar student-athletes. Congratulations to our baseball team for clinching the NJAC regular season championship — a tremendous achievement. I also want to celebrate our men’s and women’s golf teams, which both secured wins at the Muhlenberg Invitational. These victories are especially impressive given that both programs are only in their first seasons. And do not miss your chance to cheer on more Cougar success — come out to Alumni Stadium this Sunday, April 27 at noon to support men’s lacrosse as they compete in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference tournament.

I am proud to share that this was the most successful Founders Day in Kean University’s history, with an astounding $762,995 raised from 423 generous donors. Your gifts represent more than just financial support — they are acts of faith in this institution and a powerful show of belief in our students, programs and future. We are especially grateful for a transformational $250,000 gift made in honor of Kean’s 170th anniversary. This lead donation set the tone for a record-breaking day of giving, and we are humbled by the generosity behind it.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the Kean University Foundation team for their incredible work in organizing and executing this year’s Founders Day. I also want to congratulate the College of Business and Public Management, which earned the Founders Day trophy for having the highest participation among the colleges. Well done to Dean Dr. Jin Wang and his team. And to the many students who chose to give back on Founders Day — thank you. Your contributions speak volumes about the culture of care and leadership that defines our campus community.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join the President’s Advisory Council for a Student Town Hall, where we heard directly from students across the University. They brought forward thoughtful questions and suggestions on topics ranging from transportation to the implications of recent federal executive orders on our campus. I was inspired by the turnout and the depth of engagement and the constructive ideas shared.

Let me be clear: we are listening, and we will follow up. We take seriously our responsibility to support and respond to our students' needs. As I told those in attendance, Kean will remain steadfast in its commitment to access, innovation and excellence. In this ever-changing environment, I will continue to act with intention to protect this University, uphold our values and champion the well-being of every member of our community.

Also, this week I, along with Chief of Staff Audrey Kelly and Labor Counsel Zahire Estrella-Chambers, met with New Jersey City University Chief of Staff Milagros Peralta, NJCU Assistant Vice President Mark Sullivan, State Monitor Henry Amoroso and top leaders from AFT including AFTNJ President Jennifer Higgins, Kean AFT President James Castiglione and NJCU AFT President Bill Calathes, among others. It was an opportunity for us to get to know one another more as we look to combine our strengths, expertise and resources. We also look forward to meeting with the CWA and IPFTE unions to begin introductions and hear from them.

I am sure many of you saw the exciting news this morning: Olympic gymnast and two-time medalist Laurie Hernandez will serve as our 2025 Commencement speaker. She will join us at our first joint undergraduate and graduate ceremony on Tuesday, May 13 at the Prudential Center in Newark. Her journey, which is marked by resilience and trailblazing achievement as the first U.S.-born Latina gymnast to make the Olympic team in over 30 years, is sure to inspire our graduates and their families as they prepare for the next chapter.

Finally, I want to recognize the entire men’s baseball team for an outstanding season so far and a national ranking. I also want to acknowledge several outstanding student-athletes for their impressive achievements. On the baseball field, Jason Gilman reached a milestone with 200 career strikeouts; Kyle Adorno notched 200 career hits; and Tyler Stone now has 100 career hits. In softball, Nikki Lusnia has achieved an incredible 300 career strikeouts, while Andee Perseponko, Bri Sciulli and Maya Thompson all celebrated 100 career hits. Congratulations to you all.

Dear Kean Community,

I’m excited to join today’s First to Climb Higher celebration honoring our graduating first-generation students. This inaugural event recognizes a powerful part of Kean’s identity — more than 43 percent of our students are the first in their families to attend college. That’s not just a number; it’s a story of resilience. Being first-generation means pushing forward even when the path isn’t clear. It means navigating applications, balancing homework with other commitments and figuring it all out as you go. It’s about taking on invisible responsibilities and showing up anyway — with determination, dignity and vision. That’s exactly what these graduates have done, and we’re incredibly proud of them.

My thanks to the Office of Student Retention & Educational Innovation, in collaboration with the Office of Belonging and Community Engagement, the Office of Scholarship Services and the Office of Financial Aid for organizing this event. It’s a strong start to graduation season — my favorite time of year — and I look forward to celebrating many more student achievements in the weeks ahead.

We also begin our Founders Day celebrations this weekend, marking the 170th anniversary of our founding as the Newark Normal School in 1855. This is a moment to reflect on Kean’s remarkable growth — a journey fueled in large part by the generosity of our philanthropic community. Last year, Founders Day events raised more than $300,000 to support our students. This year, we aim even higher. Please consider joining us for the Cougars Climb Higher 5K on Sunday and campus events at Kean Union and Kean Ocean on Monday. And if you’re able, consider making a gift — no amount is too small. Together, we can ensure the next generation of Cougars has the support they need to succeed.

Looking ahead, I’m also excited for Kean’s first-ever Rep Your Ride Car Show happening May 17 right here on campus. This event is shaping up to be a great time for car enthusiasts and everyone else in our community. My thanks to Jared Direse, Jason Lester, Sierra Gray and the entire planning team for their work on this. If you have a vehicle you’d like to showcase, be sure to register. And it’s free for spectators so I hope you all will come out to join us.

Cougar All-Stars Students vs Staff Basketball Game 2025

It’s been a busy week across our campus. Monday’s faculty and staff vs. students basketball game was full of energy and some serious competition. The students edged out a one-point win (sorry, Will Burton), but everyone brought their A-game. Thank you to the sophomore class for organizing such a fun event. As many of you know, basketball is my sport, so this one was a highlight for me.

Tuesday’s Culture Fest welcomed more than 300 attendees and launched Unity Week in the best way possible — with community, learning and food from around the world. Yesterday’s Unity Walk gave us a chance to connect and reflect together as we explored the Liberty Hall campus. Kudos to Alternate Student Trustee Cylia Blackmon for helping to organize such a great walk. My sincere thanks to all the faculty, staff and students who participated throughout the week.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending They Promised Her the Moon, a brilliant production by the Kean Theatre Conservatory, led by director Susan Speidel. The performance was outstanding, and I was truly impressed by the level of talent on stage. Thank you to Student Government President Makenzie Kuntz for the invitation, and to everyone involved in this remarkable show.

Before I close, I want to offer two special shout-outs. First, Kean University was honored at the EdgeCon 2025 conference at Seton Hall for our leadership in online education. Vice President and Chief Online Officer Jay O’Callaghan delivered a keynote address and shared Kean’s vision for the future of digital learning. We’re proud to be setting the standard for innovation and accessibility in higher education. Second, congratulations to the Kean University Foundation for earning a bronze award in the Annual Giving Network’s Best in Annual Giving competition. Their Direct Mail Infographic Appeal stood out for its creativity and impact — a testament to the dedication of our fundraising team.

Dear Kean Community,

This week, I had the privilege of joining members of the Kean University Board of Trustees, the Wenzhou-Kean Board of Directors and other campus leaders at the annual Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) conference in Chicago. This event brings together higher education leaders from across the country to support the professional development of trustees, helping them better guide and oversee the institutions they serve. We were especially proud to see our Board of Trustees recognized at this national conference for their exemplary leadership practices. AGB, funded by a grant from the Gates Foundation, is researching best practices in higher education governance and chose Kean's board, along with four others, to spotlight. This well-deserved honor is yet another way Kean is being recognized on a national stage for excellence. I am deeply grateful to our trustees for their steady guidance and unwavering support of our institution. Their dedication to Kean continues to set a powerful standard — one that inspires confidence and admiration across the higher education community.

Back here on campus, we continued to shine a spotlight on the generosity that fuels our mission. Yesterday, we hosted the first of two Spring Scholarship Recognition events. More than 330 students, family members, donors, supporters and Kean team members came together to celebrate the power of philanthropy in transforming lives. Last academic year, the Kean University Foundation issued 900 scholarships totaling more than $3.4 million thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors. These funds make it possible for Kean students — many of whom are the first in their families to attend college — to pursue their goals and unlock their potential.

During the ceremony, Jennifer Costa, a College of Business and Public Management Advisory Board member, presented a generous donation to the college on behalf of the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce. Moments like these remind us that Kean’s spirit of giving runs deep, and that spirit is what makes our community thrive. I want to thank the teams at the Kean University Foundation and the Office of Scholarship Services for organizing such a meaningful and uplifting event.

We are just 10 days away from celebrating Founders Day on April 14, a tradition that brings together our entire University community in support of philanthropy. Everyone knows I love a good, friendly competition, and I am especially looking forward to this year’s College Competition. Last year, the College of Health Professions and Human Services took home the coveted Founders Day trophy for having the highest participation among the colleges. Who will win it this year? I can’t wait to find out — and to see our community come together once again to make a difference for Kean students.

Dear Kean Community,

This week we took another important step in our proposed merger with New Jersey City University (NJCU) by submitting a draft Letter of Intent to NJCU’s leadership for their review. As you know, the NJCU Board of Trustees earlier this month voted to move forward with our proposal to merge our two institutions and establish Kean Jersey City. We look forward to NJCU’s response to the draft letter in the coming weeks. Once this letter is signed by both universities, we will enter a period of due diligence — a time for teams from Kean and NJCU to learn more about each other’s academic and administrative operations as we explore the path forward together.

In the meantime, we’re already laying the groundwork to support collaboration and transparency throughout the process. We’ve scheduled a joint meeting with labor union leadership from both campuses on Tuesday, April 15 to begin building relationships and learning from one another. We are also planning a joint Town Hall meeting for our university communities, which will take place after the Letter of Intent is signed. This is a pivotal moment for both institutions, and we are committed to keeping our students, faculty and staff fully informed every step of the way. This week also brought an inspiring celebration of leadership and empowerment. I had the pleasure of attending the Women’s Leadhership Panel co-hosted by the Office of Alumni Engagement, Student Government Association, Office of Belonging and Community Engagement, and the Office of Student Retention and Educational Innovation. Four remarkable women — Felicia Bourke, Sara Peña ’96, Assemblywoman Shavonda E. Sumter ’96 and Michelle Velez-Jonte ’04 M.A. — joined us to share their professional journeys, offering powerful stories, insights and words of wisdom to our students and alumni.

Kean First Lady Darlene Repollet did a phenomenal job moderating the discussion — and on her birthday, no less. I was so impressed by her voice and presence that I asked her to take it a step further and host a new podcast featuring women leaders from across the state. Stay tuned for more details about that exciting project. My thanks to Carol Ann Koert and the Alumni Engagement team for their leadership on this event, and I especially want to recognize student Susan Berube for her powerful remarks. Well done to everyone involved.

On a personal note, I had the opportunity this past weekend to cheer on my daughter Taylor, the manager of the NYU women’s basketball team, and their players as they captured their second straight NCAA Division III championship. Dear Kean Community,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and enriching Spring Break. I was honored and truly inspired to spend the break participating in a transformative Travelearn experience alongside more than two dozen Kean students and University leaders in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa. This journey was one I will not soon forget. We were fortunate to be guided by Kean Senior Human Rights Fellow Ndaba Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, as we visited sites tied to his grandfather’s legacy, including Robben Island and the Mandela family home. These experiences served as a powerful reminder of the “why” behind our Travelearn program. Our students were challenged to reflect on global issues like social justice, racism, apartheid and the role of advocacy in shaping a better world.

Seventy additional students spent their Spring Break exploring the world through Travelearn programs in Iceland, Ireland and Wenzhou, China. These programs take learning out of the classroom and give our students meaningful opportunities to grow both academically and personally. I am proud of our commitment to global education and grateful to the team that makes these experiences possible – especially Senior Vice President Felice Vazquez, Assistant Vice President Jessica Barzilay and the Center for International Studies. My thanks especially to Marvin Adames, Muhammad Hassan and John Raue for their support on the South Africa trip. Travelearn is not your typical study abroad. This is study abroad the Kean way – bold, immersive and impactful.

Today, we welcomed more than 1,000 middle and high school students, along with community members, to our campus for the 17th Annual Human Rights Institute Conference. This year’s theme explored how Gen Z is driving change through advocacy, entrepreneurship and digital activism. We were honored to host powerful speakers, including David Hogg and Tiana Day, who inspired attendees to be bold, courageous and active participants in creating a more just world. This annual conference is a highlight of our academic calendar and a reflection of Kean’s role as an anchor institution in our region. Through public events like this, we extend our mission beyond the classroom, connecting students and community members with opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue and social impact. Thanks to Adara Goldberg and Sarah Coykendall for organizing it under Felice and Jessica’s leadership.

Human Rights Conference - Gen Z Driving Change — Kean's 2025 Human Rights Award Winners

I also want to take a moment to congratulate Braelyn Wilson, a standout first-year student on our swim team, who earned Second Team All-American honors in the 50 Freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. She will compete again tonight, and we are cheering her on as she represents Kean on the national stage.

Looking ahead, I encourage all students to attend the Career and Internship Fair on Monday, March 24 from noon to 5 p.m. at Harwood Arena. More than 150 employers will be on campus, and this is a fantastic opportunity to connect with professionals, explore career options and prepare for life after graduation. I urge you to RSVP in advance and bring your resume – you never know what doors might open.

Important Update on Kean University and New Jersey City University - Wednesday, March 5, 2025

Dear Kean University Community,

I am proud and delighted to announce that New Jersey City University’s (NJCU) Board of Trustees this afternoon voted to accept Kean University’s merger proposal. Over the next several weeks, we will negotiate a letter of intent with NJCU that begins a thoughtful and hopefully successful process of bringing the long-serving institution into the Kean University system as Kean Jersey City.

NJCU has served as an anchor institution for Jersey City for nearly a century, providing an accessible and community-centered education to a diverse student body. Its mission is deeply rooted in student success, community empowerment and economic mobility – all traits we share and will preserve as we work to welcome NJCU into a Kean system, which reaches from Kean Ocean to Kean Skylands to our Wenzhou-Kean University campus in China. That is one of several reasons why this collaboration will present significant benefits and advantages to both institutions and the students we serve. This merger is rooted in shared missions to enhance educational access and opportunities.

Both Kean and NJCU share missions dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment that empowers students to succeed. By merging our strengths, we can deepen our commitment and resources to diversity, equity and inclusion, ensuring that every student has the support they need to thrive and persist through graduation. The integration of academic programs will allow us to expand and enhance the curriculum, creating a more robust educational framework that prepares our students for success.

Jersey City’s proximity to New York City is a tremendous asset providing students with unparalleled access to internships, cultural experiences and networking opportunities. By leveraging this vibrant urban environment, we can continue to enrich students' educational experiences, equipping them for success in the competitive job market. In joining forces, we will broaden our impact and create more pathways to educational access for every student. Dear Kean Community,

This week, we came together for what I call family time here at Kean University. I had the honor of hosting a forum for faculty and staff to discuss the recent federal executive orders and their impact on Kean. It was an opportunity to engage in open and honest dialogue. As a university, we are built on a foundation of trust and shared commitment to our students. When we take time to listen to one another, we strengthen that foundation. More than 460 faculty and staff registered for the event, demonstrating their deep investment in our University and its future. As I shared with the group, while we are moving toward compliance with these federal orders, we are doing so intentionally on our own timetable and in alignment with our mission and values. We are not navigating these changes alone. We are also working collaboratively with other public universities in New Jersey, keeping our students as our north star.

Kean Faculty and Staff Forum Spring 2025

Diversity is at the core of who we are — it is what draws so many to Kean, it is part of the mission that drives us, and that will not change. As I looked around Harwood Arena during the forum, I saw the beautiful tapestry of our community. Our actions — how we serve our students and our communities — will remain steadfast. That is our promise, and that is our purpose.

Family time is about listening, and I was grateful to hear directly from our dedicated faculty and staff who work with our students every day. They spoke candidly about their concerns, and I appreciate their honesty. Creating a space where people feel comfortable sharing openly requires trust, and I am proud of the culture of transparency we have built together at Kean. I extend my sincere thanks to Dr. David Birdsell, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, who joined me on stage to help lead this important conversation. I also want to recognize Senior Vice President Jerome Hatfield, Vice President Kerrin Lyles, Chief Wellbeing Officer Erika Charles, General Counsel Kristin Ganley, Labor Counsel Zahire Estrella-Chambers, Senior Vice President Felice Vazquez, and our most senior faculty member, Patrick Ippolito, for their contributions to the discussion. The involvement of so many leaders from different areas of the University highlights just how deep and widespread our work is here at Kean.

Following the forum, several people have shared that they walked away with a greater sense of comfort — this is exactly why we hosted it. We will hold a student forum in April to ensure all members of our community are informed and can engage in these important conversations. We are a family, and we will move forward together. But let’s also acknowledge that this work is not easy. Every day, we dedicate ourselves to serving our students and strengthening this institution. This week, our Financial Aid and Information Technology teams worked together to distribute more than 2,900 financial award statements, offering $64 million in assistance. Their dedication ensures that students have the resources they need to pursue their education, and I deeply appreciate their hard work. That is exactly the kind of effort that makes a lasting impact on Kean and our students.

As we look ahead, know that we will continue to assess, evaluate and chart an intentional path forward for Kean. We will not make any decisions in haste. Every step we take will be thoughtful, deliberate and rooted in our mission. And most importantly, we will safeguard the future of Kean University — together.

Dear Kean Community,

Just over a week ago, we announced the exciting news of Kean's R2 research designation. This designation continues to open avenues for Kean University, and our students, solidifying Kean's status alongside New Jersey’s top-tier research institutions. Over the past week, I have corresponded with colleagues across the country who recognize how transformational this moment is for our community. Next month, I look forward to sharing how R2 charts our path forward with the Board of Trustees and then the community at large.

This milestone is one we achieved together. It is a testament to the hard work of our faculty, staff and students who have committed to elevating Kean’s research profile. I know many of you have already heard of this news and shared it with family, friends and colleagues, and I encourage you to share it more broadly. As we enter our Spring recruitment season, this outpouring of Cougar pride will help us continue attracting the best and brightest to Kean.

As we celebrate our successes, we must also address the challenges that impact our University community. My senior leadership team continues to work diligently to assess the implications of several recent federal executive orders. This week, I met with other university presidents from across New Jersey in a meeting coordinated by New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Brian Bridges. He reiterated the state's strong support for the rights of our students, faculty and staff, and I assure you that Kean stands firmly in that commitment as well.

Our strategy is clear: We will comply with federal requirements while preserving our core values. As part of this effort, the University Planning Council is reviewing Kean’s mission to ensure it aligns with regulations and reflects our principles. Any updates will go before the Board of Trustees for consideration. To keep everyone informed, I will host a faculty and staff forum next week to discuss these executive orders and their impact ahead of Spring Break. Faculty and staff are encouraged to RSVP here. A student forum will follow in April.

Even in challenging times, it is important that we continue the great work of this University. Last night, I had the opportunity to attend a networking event for student-athletes and alumni, and it was an inspiring reminder of the power of connection and mentorship. Fifty-five student-athletes from field hockey, soccer, football and other teams connected with more than a dozen alumni who generously shared their expertise, career advice and professional guidance. These kinds of experiences are essential to helping our students build networks that will support their success beyond Kean. I also had the opportunity to meet our new Director of Career Services, Rita Ruiz, who will be spearheading efforts to prepare our students for the workforce and connect them with professional opportunities. My thanks to the Office of Alumni Engagement, led by Carol Ann Koert, and B.J. Johnson in Athletics for coordinating this event.

As we approach Spring Break, there is much to be excited about on campus. Many students will be embarking on Travelearn experiences across the globe, broadening their horizons through immersive learning opportunities. We look forward to hearing about their experiences. Finally, I want to congratulate our men’s and women’s basketball teams on qualifying for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) tournament that begins tomorrow. We are proud of their dedication and success, and I encourage everyone to support them as they compete.

Dear Kean Community,

This is a historic week for Kean University. Yesterday, we proudly announced that Kean has earned an R2 research designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Today, as I reflect on this incredible milestone, I am filled with gratitude for the dedication and hard work that brought us to this point. This achievement is not just a new classification — it is a defining moment in our University’s history, one that will elevate Kean’s reputation and impact for years to come.

R2 status instantly benefits the University. It enhances our prestige, helping us attract top students, faculty and staff. It opens doors to increased research funding and new collaborations with leading institutions worldwide. Enhanced research experiences will better prepare students for graduate studies and career success. We will strengthen our impact on the economic growth and development across our community and throughout New Jersey, deepening our role as an anchor institution. Ultimately, Kean’s visibility on the national and global stage will continue to grow.

When I applied for the presidency of Kean in 2019, my cover letter outlined a clear vision: to lead Kean to R2 status. That vision has become a reality through the collective efforts of our entire community. I want to recognize and thank the incredible people who played pivotal roles in this achievement. Dr. Jeffrey Toney, former provost and vice president for academic affairs, now a visiting professor at MIT, set us on the right path with support from Reenat Munshi, director of student research and innovation. Senior Vice President for Administration Dr. Michael Salvatore ensured we stayed on the path to reach our goal. Jennifer Strahan and the budget team made sure we had the resources to support this growth. Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. David Birdsell and Vice President for Research Dr. Sue Porterfield built on that foundation. The President’s Cabinet, University Senate, labor unions and so many others contributed to this achievement. Above all, I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees for believing in this vision and providing unwavering support. They say that you are the company you keep, and I could not be prouder to stand alongside the people at Kean who work every day to serve our students and advance our mission.

In just over four years, Kean has evolved from a regional institution to a nationally recognized research university. We have achieved doctoral institution status, and now, an R2 designation. But this is only the beginning. Over the next five years, we will deepen our commitment to community engagement through impactful research initiatives. We will expand our research footprint to better serve the state of New Jersey. Working together, we will transform 1085 Morris Avenue into a center for cutting-edge discoveries that benefit our students, faculty and surrounding community.

The impact of this milestone is already being recognized far and wide. Media outlets, including Yahoo! News, ROI-NJ and NJBIZ, highlighted our achievement, and I have received calls from leaders across the country extending their congratulations. The nation is taking notice of what is happening at Kean. Our momentum is undeniable, and people want to be part of it.

This moment deserves to be celebrated. We are already planning a special R2 celebration later in the Spring semester, and I look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks. For now, let us all take a moment to appreciate the magnitude of this achievement. A couple of years ago, in my Opening Day Address, I shared my vision of elevating Kean from great to elite. This week, we did just that — the Kean way. Cougars keep climbing higher.

Dear Kean Community,

The spirit of engagement and excellence that defines Kean University was on full display this week as we connected with leaders across New Jersey and celebrated the achievements of our alumni. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., with a small delegation from Kean as part of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce’s Walk to Washington event. This tradition, which was revived for the first time in five years, brings together lawmakers, business leaders and higher education representatives from across the state for important conversations about New Jersey’s future. Kean was proud to be one of the sponsors of the event, which provided a valuable platform to share our story with members of New Jersey’s Congressional delegation, gubernatorial candidates and other key leaders. My thanks to the Kean and Kean University Foundation staff who supported the event at various train stops along the way — your efforts ensured that Kean’s presence was both visible and impactful.

On Tuesday, we also had the privilege of celebrating Kean’s diverse and vibrant alumni community at our Celebrating Black Excellence event. The energy in the room was inspiring as we connected with alumni at various stages of life, all of whom maintain strong ties to our University. The event paid special tribute to the Divine Nine, the historically Black fraternities and sororities that have played an essential role in shaping leadership and service in our community. As a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, I was honored to celebrate these organizations and their lasting impact at Kean and beyond. It was especially meaningful to share this moment with my wife, Darlene, who along with our daughter Lauryn, is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I extend my gratitude to Carol Ann Koert and Breanna Hernandez from our Office of Alumni Engagement, Lisia Aikens from the Center for Africana Studies, and alumni Craig Morris and Kerel Cooper for their hard work organizing this event and bringing together alumni from across the region.

This is also always an exciting time of year for Kean Athletics as we kick off spring sports. In the coming days, our men’s lacrosse and baseball teams will begin their seasons, bringing a new wave of Cougar pride to campus. Meanwhile, our winter sports teams are entering a crucial final stretch. I encourage all students to come out for the Division of Student Affairs Night of Support on Wednesday, February 12, to cheer on both our men’s and women’s basketball teams. The first 100 students will get a free Kean t-shirt, and you will also have the chance to show your Cougar pride and support our student-athletes. Additionally, our women’s swimming team, which was just ranked no. 25 in the country among Division III teams, is gearing up for the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship next week. Good luck to all our athletes as they continue to represent Kean with excellence.

Dear Kean Community,

This has been a challenging week for many in our community. During this time of uncertainty, I want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to maintaining an inclusive learning environment across our campuses. We understand the concerns many of you have expressed regarding recent presidential executive orders affecting immigration, diversity initiatives, gender expression, federal funding and more. I want to assure you that my senior leadership team is thoroughly analyzing these executive orders, assessing their impact on our university community and developing comprehensive strategies to uphold our educational mission. We are actively engaging with labor unions, student representatives, fellow university presidents and industry groups nationwide to inform our approach. We will continue to share updates with relevant stakeholders.

In times like this, it is easy for rumors to spread and fear to grow so I would like to address some immediate concerns: There have been no confirmed reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on our campuses. If you ever see such activity on campus, please inform the Kean University Police Department (KUPD). However, please remember that there are often police and public safety officers from other jurisdictions on campus for routine matters. KUPD has a close eye on our campus and is here to safeguard everyone. I also want to emphasize that we protect student privacy under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and do not release student records unless legally required.

Even in challenging times, our community continues to exemplify Kean's values through our vibrant campus life. This week, we celebrated our diversity through two significant events: Kean Pulse hosted a joyous Lunar New Year celebration where 250 students and guests welcomed the Year of the Snake in the Miron Student Center, while Harwood Arena came alive for 500 students during Meet the Greeks, highlighting our 25-plus Greek organizations that reflect our rich cultural diversity. Next week, we will honor our legacy through a Celebrating Black Excellence alumni event on Tuesday, February 4, followed by a campus Black History Month kickoff in the Miron Atrium on Thursday, February 6. These gatherings represent authentic expressions of our university's values.

As we navigate this period, our mission remains steadfast: Kean University, New Jersey’s first Urban Research University, creates a world-class, innovative and inclusive society through equity and excellence in teaching, learning, global research and impactful public engagement. This mission guides every decision we make.

I ask each of you to support one another during this time, recognizing that some face greater challenges than others. The Kean Counseling Center and Employee Assistance Program stand ready to support those in need. I encourage everyone to take a step back, take a deep breath, and continue with the important work that we are doing here at Kean. Remember what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. teaches us about persistence: "If you can't fly, then run; if you can't run, then walk; if you can't walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."

Together, we will continue moving forward, staying true to our values and mission.

Dear Kean Community,

As we conclude another week at Kean, I draw inspiration from pastor and author Charles Swindoll's wisdom: "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it." By viewing the events around us through the lens of our reactions, we can find greater peace and strength in our own power. At Kean, we approach our mission with purpose and strategic vision, proactively shaping our path forward rather than impulsively reacting to events around us. We embrace our diversity, overcome challenges and guide our growth with student success as our compass. This commitment remains steadfast regardless of external circumstances or changing political climates. I invite you to reflect today on your role at Kean and consider how this mindset can strengthen your own work and our university community.

This week we hosted our first Muslim Heritage Month celebration, exemplifying Kean's commitment to diversity. Our Muslim students, faculty and staff enrich our campus community through their scholarship, leadership and dedication to excellence. During the ceremony, I invited our Muslim faculty members to join me on stage to recognize their vital contributions to Kean. Experience has taught me that meaningful understanding develops through authentic connections with people of different faiths and backgrounds. When you work or study with someone every day, you learn to appreciate their perspectives and beliefs. My thanks to Dr. David Jefferson and others who organized this great event.

Kean University First Muslim Heritage Month Celebration

Today, I also had the privilege of joining the Faith-Based Institute of Public Policy for their rescheduled Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and his commitment to nonviolence and service to the community. The participants assembled 500 care packages of food items, toiletries and more to donate to local colleges, including Kean, and high schools for students in need. My thanks to the team from the Office of Government Affairs and Community Partnerships for teaming up with the Jewish Federation of Greater Metrowest NJ to organize such a wonderful celebration.

Building on our spirit of unity, Kean will introduce a new tradition this Spring with a combined graduation ceremony for our undergraduate and graduate students on Tuesday, May 13. This consolidated celebration aligns with practices at other research universities and reflects our evolution since integrating the Nathan Weiss Graduate College programs into our academic colleges. Doctoral candidates will participate in a separate hooding ceremony on Thursday, May 8. Every graduate will still walk across the stage and hear their name announced, preserving this important Kean tradition. The size of the Prudential Center allows us to provide four guest tickets per graduate, an increase from previous years for our graduate students. As a first-generation college graduate myself, I understand the significance of this milestone. Commencement season is my favorite time of year, and this unified celebration promises to be our most memorable yet.

Dear Kean Community,

"Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education." These words, written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Morehouse College's Maroon Tiger 78 years ago, resonate just as powerfully today. As we prepare to honor Dr. King on Monday, I reflect on how his legacy shapes many facets of life, particularly in higher education and our role as an urban research university deeply anchored in our community. Our commitment is steadfast: deliver academic excellence and support our students' overall personal growth, well-being and mental health.

Yesterday, I joined New Jersey Higher Education Secretary Dr. Brian Bridges and others for an American Federation of Teachers webinar discussing the future of higher education. Our conversation explored the shifting demographics and enrollment patterns across our state. As I shared during the discussion, Kean's innovative approaches to expanding our student pipeline and our comprehensive student support initiatives have become a model for success. Our growing enrollment numbers attest to that. Kean’s position as an anchor institution serving the broader community also emerged as a distinct strength. The dialogue reinforced what we already know: Kean is leading the way in building a sustainable future in higher education.

Kean’s innovation is on full display this first week of the Spring semester. We are hosting an academic delegation from Wenzhou-Kean University, building upon our October visit to China and strengthening the bonds between our campuses. This visit ensures continued engagement and collaboration between our two campuses, and we are delighted to have WKU faculty members and administrators here. I also toured the new home of the Cougar Connections Center for Social Work on the first floor of the Center for Academic Success. This strategic relocation emphasizes how student wellness and support services are a central focus at Kean. I encourage everyone to visit this impressive new space.

Earlier this week, we welcomed New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and dozens of diverse business owners from across the state to campus. We kicked off a new NJEDA-led program providing essential business development training to construction professionals from all backgrounds. We could not be prouder of this partnership, which demonstrates our expanding vision for strengthening our state's economy through inclusive education.

I also had the pleasure of joining our Physician Assistant Studies students for their white coat ceremony, which marks a pivotal moment in their journey as healthcare professionals. The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly, and I’m so proud of their contributions to equitable patient care. As I told the students and their families, they exemplify the excellence that defines our university.

Our commitment to service and support continues tomorrow. We are hosting the Statewide Dreamers Conference and Resource Fair, organized by the Latino Action Network Foundation in collaboration with CRECE: The Hispanic Leadership Center at Kean. This free event, featuring state Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin as keynote speaker, will provide resources to Dreamers and undocumented immigrants. Find more details here. As we begin this semester, let us remember our shared purpose. Whether you are a student, faculty or staff member, we each play a vital role in fulfilling our mission: "Kean University, New Jersey's first Urban Research University, creates a world-class, innovative and inclusive society through equity and excellence in teaching, learning, global research, and impactful public engagement." By keeping this mission at the forefront of our efforts, we advance toward Dr. King's vision of true education — the powerful combination of intelligence and character.
