Research Interests
Dr. Vanashri Nargund-Joshi is an Associate Professor in the Hennings College of Science, Mathematics and Technology at Kean University, where she prepares future educators to engage students in meaningful, research-based science and mathematics learning experiences. Her interdisciplinary background spans biology, science education, teacher education, and STEM learning, giving her a unique perspective on connecting disciplinary knowledge with effective classroom practice.
Dr. Nargund-Joshi began her career as a high school biology teacher and professional development provider for educators. Her teaching and research continue to be grounded in the belief that deep learning occurs when students actively investigate ideas, make connections across disciplines, and engage with authentic phenomena and experiences. At Kean, she teaches courses in biology and science education and works with both preservice and practicing teachers.
Her scholarship focuses on STEM education, teacher learning, pedagogical content knowledge, Communities of Practice, equity in STEM education, and culturally responsive approaches to science and mathematics teaching. A particular area of her work explores how traditional and cultural knowledge and practices can inform contemporary STEM education. She is also interested in designing learning experiences that bridge research and practice and support teachers in creating intellectually rich, inclusive learning environments.
Dr. Nargund-Joshi has extensive experience developing and facilitating professional learning for educators, designing K–16 STEM learning experiences, and building partnerships among schools, universities, families, and community organizations. She is the founder of STEM Nexus and has been involved in initiatives that expand access to engaging STEM experiences for children, families, and future educators.
Across her teaching, research, and community engagement, Dr. Nargund-Joshi is committed to preparing educators who are curious, reflective, and confident in creating learning environments where every student can see themselves as a capable STEM learner
