Post-Award
Successful grant management requires teamwork. Understanding roles and responsibilities will help the PI/grant director successfully manage his/her grant.
Principal Investigators/Project Directors
The PI/PD holds the final responsibility for the project's execution, including:
Fiscal and Program Management: Accountable for managing the grant's finances and program activities.
- Proposal Goals: Ensuring all goals outlined in the proposal are met.
- Reporting: Preparing and submitting all required reports.
- Compliance: Adhering to the sponsor’s and University’s terms, conditions, and policies, including:
- Budget oversight
- Personnel review
- Time and effort reporting
- Timely report submission
All grant-related issues must be reported to the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP). Compliance with federal guidelines is mandatory, and all related documents are available in the ORSP office. PI/PDs must uphold the highest integrity in data management and avoid any form of plagiarism.
Dean/Executive Director/Department Chair
- Guidance and Support: Provided by the Executive Director or Department Chair for faculty PIs, and the Dean or VP for staff PIs.
- Experienced Advice: Often, these administrators have grant management experience and can offer valuable advice.
- Open Communication: PI/PDs should feel comfortable seeking guidance and discussing their grants with their supervisors.
Grants Accounting
Responsible for financial aspects of grants, including:
- Processing Expenditures: Managing all grant-related expenses.
- Financial Reporting: Preparing and submitting financial reports.
- Billing and Funds Management: Billing sponsors, drawing down federal funds, and processing cash receipts.
- Account Closure: Ensuring timely and accurate processing of grant closeouts after final reports.
Grants Accounting collaborates closely with ORSP to ensure efficient grant-related activities.
