Housing FAQ for Fall 2021
Kean University is excited to welcome back our residential students in Fall 2021. Please see below for answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about living on campus in the Fall.
Room Assignments
Is housing available for the Fall semester?
Yes, Kean will have housing available for the Fall 2021 semester. In order to maintain social distancing, housing capacity has been reduced. Room assignments have been modified to accommodate a single student in each bedroom. The University will try to accommodate as many students as possible, but some students may remain on a waiting list.
How much will housing cost in the fall?
While all students will be living in single rooms, the cost for housing will remain equivalent to a double occupancy rate in that particular residence hall.
The following are the housing rates by building:
- Cougar Hall $6,078.25/semester
- Freshman Residence Hall $5,923/semester
- Whiteman Hall $4,905/semester
- Upperclassman Residence Hall $6,192/semester
- Quad (Bartlett, Burch, Rogers, and Sozio halls) $5,221/semester
How will housing notifications be made? What are the next steps?
Students who have been assigned housing for the Fall semester will receive an email notification from Residential Student Services.
**Anyone who has not paid the $125 housing application fee must complete payment by Thursday, July 16 via the housing portal. Students who fail to pay their housing application fee by the deadline will forfeit their assignment and lose their housing spot.
Students also need to make sure that they register as a full-time student in order to secure their housing space.
How will the waiting list be prioritized?
Students will be placed on a waiting list based on their distance from home to the University as well as the date the students completed their housing contracts.
Why didn’t the housing assignments match roommate groups and building requests?
Due to the limited spaces available for the Fall semester, some roommate groups and building preferences could not be granted. At this point, the university is prioritizing assignments based on the distance from home to the University to determine which students need to be accommodated on campus. Students who were not assigned to the residence hall that they requested will remain on the waiting list. The University’s priority is to accommodate as many students as possible.
Can students move in if they have outstanding financial balances?
All students must be current with their financial responsibilities and registered for the Fall semester in order to move into the residence halls.
What health information does the University need from students who wish to reside on campus?
All students who wish to live on campus must submit proof of health insurance as well as the following vaccines: 2 MMR vaccines, 3 hepatitis B vaccines, and the Meningitis ( ACYW) vaccine. The university highly encourages students to get the flu shot prior to the academic year. For more information, please CLICK HERE to see the Student Health Services Immunization page on the website.
Move-In
When can students move in?
In order to comply with social distancing guidelines from the CDC, students will be allowed to schedule a move in time to drop off their personal belongings beginning August 17. Students who cannot drop their personal belongings off early will be scheduled to move in during the official move-in days of Sunday, August 30 for first-year students and Monday, August 31 for returning students. Detailed move-in information will be emailed within a few weeks.
How will the move-in process work?
Students will be allowed to come to campus with one other person to assist them with the move-in process. Both individuals must bring picture identification: the resident moving into the residence hall must have a Kean ID and the guest assisting the resident must have picture ID. Both individuals must have their own face coverings and gloves in order to access the residence halls. Bins will be limited.
What should students bring to campus?
The Office of Residential Student Services will send a recommended list of items that students should bring to campus, including personal items, face coverings and thermometers. Students should only pack what is absolutely necessary. Students are discouraged from bringing any type of televisions and other large items.
Campus Living
Will guests be allowed in the residence halls?
To minimize potential exposure, guests will not be allowed to enter the residence halls during the semester. Students who are living on campus will only have access to their respective buildings. Students who live in the same building will be discouraged from visiting each other. Modifications to the guest policy will be reviewed throughout the semester.
What measures is Residential Student Services taking to keep its students safe?
We are working with our custodial staff to ensure that all touch surfaces in the residence halls are sanitized throughout the day. Hand sanitation stations will be installed at the entrances of all residence halls, including at the cafeteria.
Signs will be displayed throughout the residence halls reminding students to wear face coverings when they are in elevators and to maintain social distancing of at least six feet from others.
Will the computer labs, kitchen and lounge spaces be open?
At this time, based on the guidelines from the governor’s office, communal spaces like computer labs, lounges, community kitchens, etc will not be open. If those restrictions change, the University will re-evaluate regulations for those spaces.
Will there be dining options available on campus?
The university is currently working with its vendor to finalize food options for all students. More information about the on-campus eateries and the meal plans will be emailed to students.
