Research Interesta
Zahava L. Friedman is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Occupational Therapy. Dr. Friedman graduated from State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate in 2006, with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, followed by completion of a Ph.D. in Psychology and Cognition from Grand Canyon University in 2019. Dr. Friedman has worked in many pediatric occupational therapy settings, including public school, private school and early intervention, bringing this experience into her coursework and research at Kean University. A dual-certified professional, she holds an occupational therapy license in New Jersey/New York, alongside a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designation. This background informs a research agenda firmly rooted in interprofessional collaboration and pediatric occupational therapy practice. Dr. Friedman currently teaches pediatric, research and doctoral residency coursework, guiding occupational therapy students in their development of clinical and scholarly skills.
Dr. Friedman is the Principal Investigator of the "Raising Families" project, a research lab and grant-funded initiative that supports parent mental health and child development. Her commitment to advancing interprofessional healthcare was recognized with the 2025 Creativity in Practice and Education Award from the National Academies of Practice. An active scholar, Dr. Friedman has also authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including several exploring the intersection of occupational therapy and applied behavior analysis, the efficacy of therapeutic drumming for autistic children, and trauma-informed approaches in higher education. She serves as an editorial board member for Occupational Therapy in Health Care and is a frequent presenter at local, state, national and international conferences.
