Kean Ocean graduate Kristen Weinbel ’20 earned top honors and started her own social media marketing and digital marketing company as a student, while also dealing with a rare medical condition. 

Kean students will not see any increase in their combined tuition and fees in the coming academic year after the Board of Trustees voted on June 22 to hold the existing rates amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. With a zero increase in the cost of tuition and fees, Kean will remain the most affordable comprehensive university in New Jersey.

Three students in Kean’s Speech-Language Pathology Doctorate (SLPD) program are bringing their training and skills to the COVID-19 response, helping rehabilitate patients coming off ventilators and protecting the quality of life of vulnerable patients.

The first Kean University class to graduate in a virtual Commencement celebrated in a ceremony complete with a tassel turn, personalized videos and speeches from special guests including Whoopi Goldberg. Nearly 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students earning degrees in dozens of fields marked the joyous day in living rooms, backyards and chat rooms during the online event.

Michael DiTomasso’s educational journey at Kean proves there are different paths to success. The graphic design student is graduating magna cum laude after dropping out of Kean twice before. He also is already working in his field — as an art director at a Montclair advertising agency.

Daniela Derius-Rodriguez recently lost her mother and grandfather to COVID-19, but the Kean senior pushed through sorrow and her own bout with the illness to graduate with top honors, just as her mother would have wanted.

Two companies based in Kean University’s STEM Building — MDSeq Inc. and Eton Bioscience New Jersey — are part of global efforts to develop COVID-19 tests and treatments.
