International Applicants for Graduate Programs
Kean University welcomes applications for those applicants from abroad who meet the minimum requirements for admission to Kean's graduate programs. With a location less than 30 minutes from New York City and a little over an hour to Philadelphia, Kean is an ideal location for international students!
Applicants who will need to apply for a student visa to pursue graduate study are strongly encouraged to apply at least six months in advance of the anticipated start of the semester.
Additional Application Requirements
TOEFL or IELTS Examination
Regardless of U.S. residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students who have a bachelor’s degree from an institution outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language. Kean University references CIA’s World Fact Book as the authority of a country’s principal language.
Score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and submitted directly to us from the testing services.
Minimum Scores
TOEFL Internet Based Test (iBT) - 79
TOEFL Paper Based Test (PBT) - 550
IELTS Minimum Band Score- 6.5
TOEFL/IETLS Waiver Policy
In order to waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement, applicants may submit the following:
- Official documentation stating that they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction
- Official transcripts showing that they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university
Foreign Credential Evaluation
If you have completed any part of or all of your post-high school education outside the United States, you must have a course-by-course evaluation completed of your foreign educational credentials evaluated by a credential evaluation service that is a current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). The results of this evaluation must be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions by the published deadline for your program. Please be advised that neither NACES nor any of its member service providers have any affiliation with Kean University. A current list of NACES members may be found at www.naces.org.
Application for the Certification of Eligibility (Form I-20) for the Student Visa
Concurrent to admissions process for the Nathan Weiss Graduate College, all international applicants are required to submit the International Student Supplement to the Office of International Student Services. This supplement is required for all applicants requiring an I-20 (Affidavit of Eligibility) that is required to secure an F-1 Student Visa.
